Creating a course

Creating the container, and the two fields that quietly determine how well extraction works.

Creating a course

  1. 1
Open My Courses → New Course

    From the faculty sidebar.

  2. 2
    Identity

Name, code, subject, term. These appear on every report the course produces, so match your institution’s conventions now rather than renaming later.

  3. 3
    Cohort

The class or section being taught. An admin may instead link a section to the course afterwards, which enrols its members automatically.

  4. 4
    Shape

Number of lessons and lesson duration. Extraction divides the syllabus to fit these, so they change how coarse or fine your gates come out.

Why lesson count and duration matter

These two fields are the only steer extraction gets about granularity. A syllabus split across 12 lessons produces broad gates; the same syllabus across 40 produces narrow ones.

Enter the real teaching plan, not an aspiration. If you have 30 contact sessions, say 30. Gates sized against a fictional 45 will run permanently behind schedule and every coverage indicator will read as a problem.

What happens next

A draft course is invisible to students. It becomes visible when it goes active, and even then a student only sees the gates they have unlocked and the materials you have published.

Reusing a course

A course that has already been extracted and approved can be cloned for a new term or a parallel section, carrying its gates, lesson plans, materials and question banks. That avoids re-running the pipeline — and re-paying for it — on a syllabus that has not changed.
